В каролингском минускуле прописные [заглавные буквы, A B C D …] (на основе римского капитального письма) впервые сознательно отделяются на письме от Строчных. Позже в качестве прописных и инициалов [укрупненная первая буква начального слова книги, главы, абзаца] применяются Ломбардские версалы. Обозначил практическое окончание формирования графем строчных латинских букв. Также характерно появление пробелов между словами и Знаков препинания. Применялся на протяжении всего средневековья. Послужил основой для гуманистического минускула XIV–XV вв.
